July: Turning the Certainty

It’s appropriate, perhaps, for a spell like this, that our blog and podcast come a little late. We’ve been in the midst of whirling, uncertain energy for many weeks—which can so often happen when you get ready to teach or write about something. Teaching a workshop about the shadow? Expect to encounter some fear as you prep for it. Writing about the magic of uncertainty? Expect your life to get turned upside down for a little while.

In the image for this spell, we see a bird that has chased a fish underwater and a fish that has escaped the bird by leaping into the air. Or, the fish is chasing the bird. No one really knows who began this dance. For each creature, there’s an experience of being out of their element, quite literally. In this flash of a moment, we encounter a gloriously topsy-turvy world, a world made strange. Ordinary rules don’t apply here—what was up is now down, what was down is now up. Much like the Wheel of Fortune card in the tarot, this is a spell about working with the situation you find yourself in, whether or not you chose it, whether or not you could anticipate it.

Working With this Spell

If you thought you knew where you were going, there’s a chance you don’t recognize where you are now. If you’ve been lost or confused, there’s a chance you’ll find a brief moment of orientation. “Turning the Certainty” is about overturning that sense we have most of the time that we can predict and control our lives—the state of expecting that what has been happening is what will continue to happen. Working with this spell, we do our very best to let go of the familiar and welcome the new, the strange, the unforeseen. We acknowledge that both suffering and delight belong here, make sense, and require loving attention.

Last month, we encountered the place in our year-long riddle where we transitioned from the mental plane into the realm of the body. It makes sense that what follows is a feeling of change, and of difference. The body reminds us that change is ever-present. This spell is not about the changes we need to make, it’s about letting the wheel turn, and going along for the ride—invoking our capacity to revel and delight in the waves. Because wherever we are on the wheel right now, it is just a moment in the dance, and it is sure to turn and turn again.

This month:
