Blessing What Remains

Hi y’all, Jo here. From where I sit, I can see the sun setting behind heavy clouds. There’s a breeze coming in that’s catching the steam from my tea—swirling the smells of rain and tulsi into the air. It has been hot. And the tension between the beauty of this life and the pain of this life has been a lot for us all to hold. I am glad this month’s spell is a blessing.

Blessing what remains is a spell for destruction, change, and decay. We can pray here without minimizing harm, without holding on to what is leaving, and without turning away from death or despair. This big cat is the embodied power of our presence. We are in contact with the world. We see and feel loss — and — we bless what remains.

There is a magic in this spell that reorients our attention from absence to presence. Grieving is inherent to this process. Grieving blesses the hollows of our hearts. Sometimes grief is what remains. We bless our grief by turning toward it—even if we cannot touch it or feel it or let it move just yet, our attention is a blessing.
