With Oceanic Love
Welcome to September, y’all. This is Jo, writing about love. Big love. Oceanic love. This is not a fiery, quick-to-burn-out kind of love. Oceanic love is enduring love—a love of endless returning, like the waves to the shore, like the rivers to the sea. It is not always easy, but it nourishes and sustains.
This kind of love is at the heart of our story as Abacus Corvus. Early on, we struggled so hard in our collaboration, always getting caught in the pain we grew up in. We knew we loved each other but felt so frustrated with what kept getting in the way. This was how we set our course: naming the love and our inability to feel it. Naming the love, and our dedication to find it. Like waves, we returned again and again - to ourselves, to each other, to the conflict, to our feelings, to our relationship, and to the images and spells asking to come through. This has become our main navigational support: if we’re not feeling connected to this love, we pull over and wait, trusting in the eventual return.
Yes, Corina and I love each other. We are these seals :) But oceanic love is bigger than individual love. We have centered our business around our love because we realized that this love becomes the portal for making art as medicine for other people, too. So we’ve learned to love ourselves and our relationship, but also to recognize when our egos are getting in the way. (Which is plenty of the time because we are both stubborn artists!)
Lastly, I am so pleased to let you know that we chose this image for September because in this month Corina will marry their beloved!! We will gather at the ocean for the ceremony!! Their friends and family will join in blessing and witnessing their partnership of enduring, sustaining love.
My sibling is the most generous, loving, intelligent, and hilarious person I know. Please don't hesitate to send them birthday and wedding blessings this month!
