Light Is Not What We Expect {June 2023}

QUESTION ASSUMPTIONS  •  OPACITY  •  BREAKING THE BINARY

Last month we gathered in the darkness and danced to the tune of creative disruption, vulnerability, and surprise. Our spell ended mid-sentence, in the process of uncovering something. Here we see what has been uncovered—the moon’s face floating in the daytime sky. Light has returned, and it is not what we expect.

What do we expect from the light? For ages, light has been synonymous with goodness, clarity, reason, moral and spiritual superiority. We forget that light is a form of radiation that can destroy living cells. We forget that light is responsible for all the shadows it creates. Most often, we forget that light does not belong to a simple binary.

Have you ever been startled to see the moon’s face hiding in plain sight? It just cruises through the daytime sky, ready to liberate us from the illusion of binaries. There is only one sky—at times opaquely blue and nestled around us like an overcoat, at times translucent dark with stars shining on us from distant galaxies. And there are many skies, as clouds shapeshift, and storms travel, and twilight comes.

This month’s spell asks you to see what is hidden within the obvious. Become very suspicious of simple binaries. What does it take to startle us out of core assumptions? Our recommendation this month is to throw some darkness on the situation. Laugh at your first impressions as they wander off to a more boring party. Ambiguate. Let a spell be broken.
